Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, April 2, authors from around the world have gathered to call attention to children's books. I hope you will set aside a little time tomorrow to read to a child!
International Children's Book Day is sponsored by IBBY, The International Board on Books for Young People, a non-profit organization which represents an international network of people from all over the world who are committed to bringing books and children together.
Each year, IBBY allows one of their 60 National Sections the opportunity to be the international sponsor of International Children's Book Day. The host National Section decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to create a message for the celebration and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. This year's host is Thailand, and the theme is "Books Enlighten." The annual poster was designed by Chakrabhand Posayakrit.
International Children's Book Day celebrations across the world involve the holding of special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions, or announcements of book awards. Click here to read more about IBBY.
